Ginger for Motion Sickness and Nausea in Dogs

If your dog suffers from motion sickness or an upset stomach, ginger might be the natural remedy you’ve been looking for. Ginger is well-known for its anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help ease digestive discomfort and prevent nausea. This is thanks to compounds in ginger, such as gingerol and shogaol, that help speed up digestion and reduce nausea.

Here’s how you can use ginger to support your dog’s digestive health:

How to Use Ginger for Dogs

You can give your dog fresh ginger, ginger tea, or even powdered ginger, depending on what’s most convenient. Ginger can be particularly helpful for dogs prone to motion sickness—just give it to them 30 minutes before a car ride to help settle their stomach.

Powdered Ginger Dosage:

  • 0.5 to 4.5kg: Up to ⅛ teaspoon

  • 4.5 to 9kg: ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon

  • 9 to 22.5kg: 1 teaspoon

  • 22.5 to 45kg: 2 teaspoons

  • Over 45kg: Up to 1 tablespoon

Ginger Tea for Dogs

If you prefer to give your dog ginger tea, you can either buy pre-made ginger tea or brew your own from fresh ginger root.

Ginger Tea Dosage:

  • 0.5 to 4.5kg: Less than ¼ cup, 1 to 3 times daily

  • 4.5 to 9kg: ¼ cup, 1 to 3 times daily

  • 9 to 22.5kg: ¼ to ½ cup, 1 to 3 times daily

  • 22.5 to 45kg: ½ to 1 cup, 1 to 3 times daily

  • Over 45kg: Up to 1 cup, 1 to 3 times daily

Why Ginger Works

Ginger contains gingerol and shogaol, both of which have anti-nausea properties. These compounds help speed up the digestive process, making ginger an ideal remedy for dogs suffering from nausea due to car rides, illness, or other factors.

Whether you choose powdered ginger, fresh ginger, or ginger tea, make sure to introduce it gradually and monitor your dog for any reactions. Always consult your vet before introducing new supplements, especially if your dog has a pre-existing medical condition.
